4 côtés, known by its botanical name Tetrapleura tetraptera, is a dried fruit traditionally used in both cooking and traditional medicine. Recognisable by its elongated pod with four ridges, it has a distinctive aroma that is sweet, slightly bitter and spicy.
In cooking, it delicately flavours sauces, soups and stocks, adding depth and character to dishes. Steep it in water to make an aromatic infusion that can be used as a stock. Alternatively, soak it in boiling water to soften it, then blend it into marinades for fish or poultry.
In traditional herbal practices, it is also consumed as an infusion for menstrual discomfort, postnatal recovery and to encourage breast milk production. It should not be used during pregnancy.
These are traditional uses, not established medical benefits. 4 côtés is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.
