Pèbè, also known by its botanical name Monodora myristica, is a spice native to tropical regions of Africa. It comes from a tree with striking yellow-orange flowers, which produces round fruits containing the seeds. These oval seeds are removed from the fruit and dried. Pèbè is often used as an alternative to nutmeg.

Beyond its culinary uses, Pèbè is also used in traditional medicine. Its traditional uses include:

  • For fever.
  • For constipation, when roasted.
  • For headaches, when applied to the forehead.
  • For head lice, when mixed with palm oil or palm kernel oil.
  • For haemorrhoids.
  • For a feeling of heaviness in the legs.
  • As a traditional remedy for obesity, attributed to its limonene content.
  • As a stimulant.

How to use in cooking: Remove the outer shell, then grind the seeds. Ideal for seasoning white meat and fish.

These are traditional uses, not established medical benefits. Pèbè is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.
